Shiny Swirly Sea Shells

Tamatoa's shell is covered with golden sea shells, among many other shiny treasures. These are very similar to the twisty lollipops we made a while back, with a few key differences. These Shiny Swirly Sea Shells are going onto a costume, so we used Modelite to keep them lightweight.

Materials needed include: CraZArt Modelite, drinking straws, metallic gold paint, paint brush, scissors, and Mod Podge.

Make a ball about the size of a tennis ball or a little smaller. Then roll it out with one end much thinner than the other end. Starting with the thinner end slowly wrap it around the straw. Have a little bit of the Modelite overhanging the straw and be sure the tip of the straw is completely covered. It is easier to twist the straw with one hand and to use the other hand to make sure the Modelite completely covers the straw. If there is part of the straw left sticking out just cut it off.

Where the Modelite touches itself it will stick. We had to practice and redo several sea shells before we got it right.

Let the Modelite dry at least overnight. Modelite is similar to Model Magic, but cheaper and softer even after it dries. So be careful handling it. Once dry we painted them with metallic paint. Then let that dry and gave them a coat of Mod Podge.
