Two years ago, a friend invited us to join her at the local community college's career day. Sabrina, who was ten at the time, was fascinated with the drama department's booth of student made props. She was totally engrossed! The lady manning the booth told us that there were tutorials online. I decided then and there to make that Sabrina's art class.
I spent hours searching the internet for simple props we could make from home, and I came up with some ideas to try along the way.
A few months later Sabrina gave a prop she made, an ice cream sandwich, to the owner of Seedling Theatre as a thank you for being her teacher. Later, some of Sabrina's props were included in the county fair scene of Charlotte's Web. After that Sabrina donated props for almost every play she performed in.
During the Summer of 2020, I desperately needed something to do during lockdown. So I volunteered Sabrina and myself to make props for the upcoming Willy Wonka play. We made many of the props for the candy wagon. I did not tell Sabrina that I was afraid the play would not happen. (It did, but with no audience and because of licensing not even a video for the parents. I'm very glad I requested pictures!)
I discovered I really like making props too. Who knew?

Everything looks so realistic!
ReplyDeletePart of the fun is making them as realistic as possible.
DeleteWhat a great way to spend artistic time together! Your props look so delicious I want to eat them!!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Making props together has been wonderful mother-daughter time. It's fun trying to figure out how to make them as realistic as we can.
DeleteYummy creations !!
ReplyDeleteGlad you have fun projects to do together
This has been a lot of fun and we are both learning so much! My art class was mostly drawing, some painting, and one paper mache project. Sabrina has learned to use a hot glue gun, clay extruder, oven, Xacto knife... She's worked with materials like oven baked clay, spackling, Model Magic, fabric, spray paint ...
ReplyDeleteThese are so cool... makes me kind of hungry looking at them... Great job!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. We made a ton of food props for Willy Wonka Jr. and Order Up. We ave tried to make most of them as realistic as possible.
