Model Magic Onion Rings

Onion Rings and Corn dog Props

Order Up takes place in a fast food restaurant with the slogan, "It's all here!"  Therefore Sabrina and I made a lot of food props. These onion rings were an experiment. I have to say that I am very pleased with the end result, but there are some changes I'd make if/when we make them again. It took multiple coats of paint to cover the black of the coffee grinds and to try to get the color right. Finally I felt that if we kept going we would lose the texture. So if/when we make these again we will use primer before painting them.

Materials needed are Crayola Model Magic, dried coffee grinds, ModPodge, paintbrush, primer, plate, craft paint, hot glue gun, and hot glue sticks.

First we used the Model Magic to make the shape of onion rings. We made them a bit oval shaped, with some bigger and some small ones. Some were thicker than others. Let them dry for a few days.

Next we applied Mod Podge  to the onion rings and dipped them into the coffee grinds. It took several coats to get enough for the texture to look right.

It's at this point that we would prime them in the future. Use as many layers of craft paint as it takes until you are satisfied with the look. Once dry we hot glued them together using the plate as a template of how to shape the pile.

The props manager ditched the plate and put the onion rings into a plastic take out container, which makes sense for a fast food place.

    1. They took a long time to get the color right. If I make them again I am going to use primer first.
