Faux Cakes Using Yoga Foam Blocks

Faux Cake Using Yoga Foam Blocks

Sabrina mentioned wanting to try making faux cakes. We saw these foam yoga blocks at a local dollar store and decided to find out if they would work. Every tutorial I saw either used floral foam or styrofoam. These work great!

Materials needed are a yoga block, Spackling, paint, popsicle stick, parchment paper, disposable bowl, and a putty knife.

Sabrina's first cake

Lay down parchment paper with the yoga block in the middle. If you aren't making a white cake you need to put enough spackling to cover your cake with some left over into a disposable bowl and mix in your paint. Be sure to stir well to make sure it is completely mixed. Next use the Popsicle stick to spread the spackling thickly onto the cake. Use the Popsicle stick or putty knife to smooth out the spackling. Check to be sure none of the foam block is showing.

Next time we might paint the foam block the same color as our spackling. Put the left over colored spackling into a ziplock bag so that it can be used to cover any cracks that develop. Let the spackling on the foam block dry completely then check for cracks. Cover the cracks with the premixed same color spackling. Mod Podge the cake to seal it.

Decorate the cake however you like.

We have had an issue with the spackling cracking. Not sure why.
