We have had several people think these chocolate truffle props are real. I felt bad when our three year old saw them on the table for the photo and yelled, "cupcakes!" It must be hard living with people who make fake food.
Materials needed include: ping pong ball size Christmas ornaments (ping pong balls might work too), Xacto knife, chocolate brown paint, paint brush, mini cupcake liners, lollipop sticks, floral foam, and sprinkles.
First you need to take the part that connects the ornament to the hook off. Then lay the towel down to keep the ornament from slipping while you cut the part underneath off. Go slow and turn the ornament as you cut. And always cut away from you; the Xacto knife sometimes slips while doing this. You may mess a few up while figuring out how much pressure to add- I did.
Paint the ornaments in several shades of chocolate paint. if using Christmas ornaments; set them onto lollipop sticks in floral foam to dry. They will need several coats of paint. Once dry paint the area opposite of the hole, where you want sprinkles with Mod Podge and add the sprinkles. Return the ornament to the lollipop sticks to let that dry. Then coat with another layer of Mod Podge being careful not to let it pool up near the sprinkles. You could use a spray sealant, though I haven't tried that. Glue the finished chocolate truffle into the mini cupcake wrapper and you are done.
I have used dried coffee grinds in place of sprinkles and that works well too.
